Bernanke is offering assurances that the Fed will attend to price stability

Bernanke is offering assurances that the Fed will attend to price stability, and recognizes the importance of price stability to optimal economic performance. He finished up with these assurances, turning the speech into a performance of sorts. That said, this is still a "transition" speech, in which he laid out the tension between the slowing in the economy and the unacceptable - in the medium term - pace of core inflation. He didn"t shade his comments in any objective way toward hiking or pausing. He seems to be laying out the case for either a pause or a hike, while trying to assure his listeners that the Fed will not allow inflation to continue at the recent pact beyond the near term. "Trust us" may be the main message here.
